Hey, Ben! Great question. The A chord position (fingers stacked 3, 2, 1 on B, G, and D strings) can be problematic for some guitarists, especially beginners. After all, it’s not always easy to jam three fingers into one fret on consecutive strings. Some people are forced to rearrange their fingers to fit more comfortably, while others simply can’t get all three fingers on the second fret no matter what finger combination they try. They often resort to barring the A chord by laying a finger across the first four strings of the second fret, making certain not to play the first string. There are different ways to play chords. Ultimately, you should use whichever fingering gives you the greatest comfort and ability to switch from one chord to the next. You may even find yourself learning to play the same chord with different fingerings, depending upon the context of the chord progression in which it is used. Hope this helps. ;)
