Can anyone help me get rid of a trailing ring finger? It gets in the way when doing pull offs from 4th to 2nd strings or from 4th to 1st strings. It seems to align itself to the fourth finger - i.e. it is not independent.

Check the excercise "the Jonezter" has posted, I think it was called something like "Using all four fingers." That could be some help.

I have just found the article "Using all 4 fingers" that FretSlug mentioned. it seems to be mainly for exercising the pinky and getting co-ordination. However my problem is more specific than that.....it is to do with a weak ring (third) finger of the left hand.

Are you familiar with 1-2-3-4 chromatic excercises, and variations thereof? I think they might help you...

Chromatic scale is best for yours little problem.
HereĀ“s what you can play

1) 1-2-3-4
2) 1-3-2-4
3) 1-4-2-3
4) 1-4-3-2
5) 2-1-3-2-4-3

Play these over all strings and at diferent places of the neck and you should be fine. You can use alternate picking (good for cordination between hands) our legato.
