Muting a Floyd Rose...

Anyone got any tips on making this work? I can mute on my Strat all day long, but with my Jackson/Floyd Rose trem system, it always feels like the trem system gets in the way and I can't mute as effectively as I would like. Is it something that just isn't done with floating trem systems? Or is there a trick to it to get those muted runs & licks?

You just need to find the sweet spot for you. And it might be difficult, based on my own experience. I've got a few different bridge styles on guitars and I find they [u]critically[/u] affect how easily I can mute.

For me, a TOM style is perfect, and I find Strats more difficult. I have a Schaller FR, which is a fairly high unit, so I don't find it too bad. The trick is only to keep from moving the string tension when muting.

I remember the fine tuning pegs getting in the way on my Floyd Rose. I wanted to use it so bad, I just keep playing it until it got comfortable.

This is the key to most things :)

Just don't try to overcompensate by holding your palm harder down to mute. Since it is a floating bridge, any pressure you put down there will lower the bridge when you push down and raise your pitch.

I also have the floating Floyd Rose and I find it easier and more precise to palm mute as close to the pivot point as possible. Hope that helps.

Thanks guys, those suggestions really help... its good to know that it can be done, just need to find the "G" spot :eek: thanks for the input.. and Neal, yeah, that's been my issue is the fine tuning pegs getting in the way. I'll try really light pressure as close to the pivot point as I can.
