Yeah I hear you. It does take some commitment to build it. Not too bad. It was fun, and while I was building it, I told myself, I'd never buy another tube amp again. Looking back... Not sure I would ever BUILD another one. :D

My daily amp is a SS. It's a 60watt vintage 1969 Kustom. It has a beautiful clean to it. No gain or distortion of any kind... Which is something I think I really like about it. It does one thing and that one thing it does, it does very well. There's nothing digital in it at all, it's all old school analog. Which I think is why it seems so punchy for a SS amp.
