Listening to full albums in a particular style rather than just individual songs is also a good way to try and break a style down. Trying to mix various styles together to resemble one particular genre may bring some dividends, but a more direct way of trying it out would be to just play along with some favourite albums in that particular style. You could even try to come up with something original of your own based on the rhythms of favourite songs in that genre. Often it is a case of the rhythm section's influence that gives a style of guitar playing its own particular bite, so see what you can come up with based on their patterns :)
