best blues guitarist???

greetings everyone - this is a great thing to be able to collaborate with so many. i am wanting to increase my exposure to great, and i mean great blues guitarist. i live in texas, near dallas, so we have an extraordinary amount of talent right here. would you please share a few of your guitar heros with me, and perhaps a specific song that is indicative of their musical prowess. please don't include the international obvious players, rather the down home, local cats, who are still struggling to keep the blues alive in their own way. in wouldn't be fair if i didn't share a few of my favorites. debbie davies, lucky petersen, texas slim, bugs henderson, tu tu jones, buddy whittington.

Gary Moore - Parisienne Walkways. I dunno how international famous he is.

I don't think I will participate in a "best" forum... Blues is made to let the soul speak through music, and I don't think there's a "best speaker" contest out there... By the way, Gary MOORE does kick ass, and he is known in france

perhaps i should rephrase my request, who do like the best, who is your personal favorite. and amen to gary moore. i love his playing.

Hi there. You've hit on a subject very near and dear to my heart. If you're talking current players, there's a host of them out there.

1) Tab Benoit

2) Smoking Joe Kubek

3) Anna Popovic (she's amazing. Simply amazing.)

4) Jimmy Johnson

5) Nick Moss and the Flip Tops

6) Ronnie Earl and the Broadcasters

7) Cephais and Wiggins (if you dig the acoustic/Delta style)

and many, many more.

If you're talking classic all-time players, well the list is just to darn long. :)

I would have included my favorite new player but I think he's more famous now - Joe Bonamassa

I can't understand why Gary Moore hasn't gotten more exposure. He can wipe the floor with most guitarists, imho.

As for my favorite blues guitarist...hmmm...I really can't say. There's so many that play differently, and they all move me.

There's a bunch of really, really, good players in the Calgary area. If you remember the lead break in an old Maria Muldaur song, "Midnight At The Oasis", then you've heard Amos Garret, who still fronts a band here called "The A Team". A lot of the ones who are best known around here tend to be too flashy for my taste, perilously close to the kind of wanking that ruined metal. (But that's a whole 'nother topic!)

I think the most honest blues hereabouts come from a fella named Bill Dowey, who fronts a band called the Blues Devils.

If I cast my net a bit wider, I think the ultimate in tasteful blues guitar is played by Jack Semple. I've heard some of the most famous players in the world, and sometimes they're flat-out amazing, but sometimes they're just flat. Jack, though, never disappoints! Albert King was talking about SRV, but he might well have been describing Jack Semple when he said "You got both speed and soul."

I think Jeff Healey was an amazing and oft overlooked blues guitarist, i say was, because unfortunately Jeff succumbed to cancer yesterday at only 41 yrs of age, leaving behind a wife and 2 children, a sad day for his family and the music world.

RIP Jeff.

Favourite Blues players ?
Keb Mo , Sue Foley, SRV, Rev Gary Davis, Rory Gallagher to name a few .Got to agree Gary Moore has not got the credit he rightly deserves.
Anybody heard or seen guitarist Ben Andrews? Seen him play a few times , good old time slide blues

As far as local blues greats, there's also Joe Richardson out of Austin, where I've seen him a few times...he likely comes up to Dallas from time to time.

In my thinking, the real heroes are the ones that play acoustic blues. There is "no smoke and mirrors" affect. No faking it. It is raw, pure Blues. Now you can slide up to Chicago Blues with those same cats plugged in and get that same roots feel. But when all that fancy tap dancing and flying over the moon sound comes in, it loses me. Don't get me wrong. I dig some of the new stuff and play it on my Blues radio show. It is just that where I feel at home is in that well worn easy chair of the old time blues. (putting feet up on ottaman and sipping some tea)
