Oh just so as you all know.. the May backing track is almost done. I've got a great little tune down and just doing the editing now. It is a bit boppier than the last one I did for the March track.. it's very easy to play over the top of.. very jazzy with a bunch of 7th's chords and a tricky E/G# chord.. which is actually the chord that inspired the whole thing to be honest.

The chords are:
C#m7, E/G#, AMaj7, G#Maj7 x 4
AMaj7, BMaj7, E, (D#min7), C#min7
AMaj7, BMaj7, E, (BMaj7), E

I am going to say it is in the key of C#min at this point,in 4/4 timing at 135bpm. Plenty of modes to play with on this one.. I've found at least 4 modes that sound good over the top of this one.. so lots to work with. Should have it done within the next day or so.

Oh.. the chords in the brackets are just passing chords.. so are only played for one beat.

Does anyone have a decent Pitch Shifter VST/VSTi plugin? I have one in Reaper called ReaPitch and the sound it produces sound identical to a bass but it has a full 1 second delay/lag!!! :( I am all finished with everything else but I wanted to add a bass track this time and I really suck on midi..

Hi M8,
Dont know if any of these will do... but they're all free.

Can you play "Far Far Away?"

Yes - how far would you like?

I'll check them out tonight when I get home. I did try a few others before posting that message but they all sucked and tried to do more than just pitch shift.. anyway.. if I can't get anything I will try with my midi keyboard once more and if that fails, I'll just post the track without a bass track again..

I can't remember if the latest version of FreeAmp has a pitch shifter effect - may be worth checking out also. If it does, it'll better suited to what you want anyway.

Don't use the VST as an insert - you need to to process the wav file to create a new pitch shifted wav to avoid latency. There shouldn't be a delay though - as far as I remember you have a pretty powerful system... how many inserts are you running? EQ tweaks also jack up the load on the CPU so if you have FX inserts and EQ's on each track things will slow down considerably. That's why I got a DSP card for FX - check out the UAD-1 card, great investment (got mine used on Ebay for a fraction of the price).

Yup.. that's what I needed to do.. play it without the plugin active and then turn it on afterwards. Sorry it's a bit later than I thought but I have finished it now. Please let me know ASAP if the mix is too bassy or if it sounds weird so I can fix it before we get too far into soloing. I just broke a string on my guitar, haven't broken a string for about 10 years.. I think it's just the extreme weather we've been having lately.. lots of heat during the day and cold at night.

Everything is the same as I said in my first post except that it is only 12 bars of the first chord progression:
C#min7, E/G#, AMaj7, GMaj7 x 3 (instead of x4)

Just sounds better with only 12 bars.

Anyway.. the link is below.. please.. this is the first time I have added bass with a pitch shifter and I haven't had much experience mixing a bass track so if it's too weird.. let me know so I can fix it.

gt solo assignment - may 2008.mp3 - 7.04MB

Alternate (though they encode it at less than half the bit-rate so the quality is not as good)

Just downloaded it. Sounds real good! I am going to start exploring which scale I want to use. Thanks for the great track!

Holy Cow Light, that first link has more pop-ups than a shooting gallery. I'll settle for the Soundclick lo-fi version. ;) Drums sound very prominent in the mix on my crappy PC speakers, however I'll see what becomes of this in Logic...

Cool track though mate, has a nice progression and it's a catchy rhythm - was looking forward to something different.

Can you please give me a better file sharing place then? I never get any pop-ups from there but this is the second time I've had bad reports about it..

Thanks

Also.. I mixed the rhythm guitar lower this time because I didn't like how it sounded last time. So the drums and the bass are at the top of the mix.

I just recorded a really rough rendition of what ideas I have for the solo of for this month. I only have 5 strings on my guitar at the moment but I think I did pretty well, except for the obvious exploratory mistakes.. hehe.. :) I only rendered it in 128 bitrate to upload to SoundClick.com.

Sorry but I will not be able to check your submission for a little bit. I do not like to listen to any entries until after I have finished mine. I do not want to be influenced by what I hear. I should have mine done by Monday. I usually get mine done pretty quick. I am really having fun with this one. Once again nice backing track. :)

I agree with Fingerspasm, i usually dont like to listen to any tracks until I get at least some kind of idea in my head that I can call my own, but for some reason on this track im having a little difficulty breaking out of this monotonous sequence in my head. Gotta tell ya, this track was a real pleasure to listen to....really beautiful playing, that sequence between 1:15 and 1:50 is REALLY well done.
And with only 5 strings! Looking forward to hearing your final version!

OK, here's mine. Not exactly what i envisioned, but i think the main idea comes across. Im open to any suggestions as to how I could better break this up to avoid the predictable run on.....
