Skid Row "squeal"

Hello everyone. I was wondering if anyone here knew how to get that "squeal" when playing riffs such as the intro to Skid Row's "The Threat" or the main riff in Bon Jovi's "You Give Love A Bad Name." A friend showed me a method of holding the pick nearest the tip and letting your thumb brush the string just after the pick strikes it. It works sometimes but it's very difficult and inconsistant. Any help?

I get it better if I really dig into the notes, rather than picking lightly. To make it easier, put the gain on your amp up very high, and put bass and treble controls up full, putting the mids down to zero. Once you get better, you can change the eq to make it sound a bit nicer, but that makes it a lot easier at first.

Something about Skid Rows pinch harmonics are different though?
I can do the same fret harmonics anytime I so desire, but I can't get them to be the same pitch! I think maybe it is because they are overdubbed and a higher octave harmonic is used? Or maybe a different interval is being played by scotti or snake?
Anyways, the sound is great, and yeah the before dudes are right. Its pretty easy and don't pussyfoot around, make those strings scream for you!

I was thinkin maybe when you tryin to find this elusive harmonic sound one could consider where the right hand is digging (pinching into the string.
I.E)are you above the bridge pick up?,..neck pick up?
somewhere in between or even on the fretboard.....anywhere.)
that effects the attack and tonality alot too.
also a way of the butt of your right hand brushes the same string ever so slieghtly as you dig in or pinch for the harmonic is a great way to vary the sound too.

If you check out the sound file on Schmange's pinch harmonic page it gives an excellent example of gettin different harmonics pinching different places over the bridge.
