For cab mics you really can't beat the venerable shure EM57, It's gold Jerry, GOLD.

As far as what else you'll need, you could just get a 1/4" to 1/8" adapter at rat shack and go into the mic input on the sound card.

SM57 will run ya ~$80 but you'll have it forever so.........
Rat shack adapter less that $5

HAHA, I thank you for the rep. I just noticed the jump in points :D

Another thing I didn't mention, if you can get ahold of 2 sm57s then you can use both either on close up to the speaker (between the edge and the middle seems to be the sweet spot) and an ambiant one further away. This will add some really nice natural verb (not much but you'll hear it) as well as a very very slight delay. Experiment with mic placement as this is somewhat of a black art.

Rep points from me are like gold Jerry, gold!! the more rep you have the more they are worth when you give them ---thus people like Magicninja are the "Dons" of rep points---

I got a Sennheiser e609 not too long ago, and it has really done a good job for recording. Its a cab mic pretty much, so if your amp buzzes or hums at all, it picks it up a little, but no complaints other than nit picky ones like that. And obviously when your playing, the hum is out of the picture anyways. Well, thats my 2 cents. Good mic. Yes, $100, but it hasn't let me down yet. Might I add, you can mic just about anything with it. I've done everything from saxes to vocals. The backing doesnt let hardly any sound in either, so thats a great feature too. Alright, I'll stop talking now.

It's a great mic. The ability to mic real close is awesome. Nothing else other than the amp is heard. I've tried talking into the back of it, and you can hardly even hear it. Hope you like it.
