3 guys pay $10 each and get a hotel room for $30....the manager later realizes they were charged $5 too much and gives the bellboy a fiver to give back to them. The bellboy says to himself..."I will give each guy $1 back and keep the $2" now the men each paid $9 equaling $27 and the bellboy has $2. Where is the other $1?

It was swallowed up in taxes.
For life is quite absurd and death's the final word, You must always face the curtain with a bow

I think I see the flaw in this problem, but I don't know how to explain it.

Messed up. You look at it in the sense that they each payed $9, then they theoretically only payed $27 for the night and the bellboy pocketed $2...bring you to $29. Yet you look at it in the sense of only being charged $25, $3 were given back, bellboy pockets $2. Brings you to a $30 total. Strange....
Let your soul shine. Its better than sunshine. Its better than moonshine. Damn sure better than rain.

Ok, I think I may have come up with the words to explain it.
>It makes sense at first glance to think that they paid a total of $27 ($9 each), because they paid $10 each and got $1 back. However, since the manager overcharged them $5, the price of the room was actually $25, which means they actually paid about $8.33 apiece. So the manager has $25, the bellhop has $2, and the three guys have $1 each.
25+2+1+1+1 = 30.<
