I've just spent far too much of my Sunday evening reading about a new guitar amplifier that trashes every myth that we've been slaves to since forever!
The idea being plugged for years at http://www.amptone.com/#quiet is that guitar players really need a rig that can produce stage-type power amp distortion tone at sound levels that make it possible to practice in an apartment at 3:00 AM.
It seems a company based in London, Ontario, Canada, has produced a recording studio amp that can do it! Check it out!

My vintage Ampegs, (a VT-22, 120 Watt 2x12 combo, and a VT-40, 60 Watt 4x10 combo) now seem seriously excessive!
Lets hear it fellas... is this the start of something amazing?
Milliwatt Power Amps????

I have an 80 watt Marshall, and I so rarely get to hear the good side of it, this amp sounds very, very cool, though very expensive too.
"Dozens of people spontaneously combust each year, it's just not that widely reported".

I still have the first Sony Walkman Sports AM/FM-Stereo Cassette machine that I bought in 1986. If memory serves, it cost me about $215 Canadian, and that was on sale! These days something similar can be found for about $35.
If this concept catches fire, and it certainly deserves to, I expect to see a fairly versatile stompbox version on the market fairly soon. Maybe two years?
Take a look around on that Amptone site. There are a lot of people working on this. The first ones on the market are always very expensive, and need some fine-tuning as to which features are important to the end user. The London Power product is aimed at engineers working in a studio. Something gig-ready is sure to follow, from somebody.
