1.I really recemend a guitar teacher.
a guitar instructor can teach you the correct fingerings,
for your left hand, plus the correct way to use your pick,
or fingers plus the correct way to use your right hand.
2.If you start out wrong its kinda of hard later on,
down the road to correct your bad habits.
3.Learning how to tune your guitar will give you some,
ear training which i recemend.
4.Tabs are good but they don't teach you (Timeings or,
or the meter of the lick or song your trying to play;
plus the down-strokes or up-strokes when picking with,
your right hand.(or how to hold and use your left and right hand.
5.You will need a good guitar book.
6.You will need to learn some music theory.
7.Also if you have friends that are takeing lessons,
you might try getting around them ,if you can't afford,
guitar lessons.
A good guitar instructor can spot bad habits when your,
learning plus correct them.
P:S Tab is easy to learn on the net but you will find that,
alot of sites will use the wrong symbols plus the wrong,
Fret numbers for your left hand.(We all make mestakes,
sometimes when writing out tabs.

Skee1 is bang on, I am self taught and was in a rut, took Skee1's advice from another post and got private lessons.

Wow they opened another door, lessons are the way to go along with his other suggestions.
While I'm sat here, Playin', I'm tryin' to free my mind!

a guitar teacher sounds good, but is not necessary. i used the internet as the guide for everything i learned on my guitar. some people consider it teaching myself- but i consider the websights as my teacher. check this sight out, and if it doesn't help you, then you might want to consider a teacher http://www.supersonic.net/guitar/
