Okay, look at it this way. What is a real waste of cash? Spending a hundred bucks on a pedal that sits in the closet, or spending 150 bucks or more on a pedal that has to be pried outta your rig because you use it so much? The same thing could be said for it going the other way around too. If the cheap pedal gives you the sound you are looking for, by all means get it. The one time that this rule doesn't apply is when the pedal is cheap because it is made poorly and will not stand up to use.
