My favorite guitar player is a tie between Slash and Randy Rhoads. The are so creative and fast.It makes you want to just rewind and listen again every time.

Jimi Hendrix: he's the ultimate guitar player. at least to me, i've never heard anyone who compares to him. the's the greatest, and probably on of the most creative musicians of all time

although, lately, i've become very interested in Yngwie Malmsteen. his speed is amazing, i don't know how he does it, he's awesome
To improve technique and of course trying to keep all as clean as possible. I know my own limits and speed limits and so on I never play anything I'm not capable of. That wouldn't make any sense. After three years of playing I tried to play everything as fast as possible and that sounded, I would say, like shit, and I didn't realize that if I'd play bit slower things than I was capable of playing then everything would sound much better.

In no particular order:-

Brian May (Queen) - Great tone, great playing
Eric Johnson - Emotional playing, with great technique
Joe Satriani - 'Nuff said
James Hetfield - Sings at the same time!
Mark Knofler - So simple, it's difficult

There's so many others, but I think that's the core.
Don't worry too much about me, ignore me long enough and I'll go away.

Neal Schon. He's been a professional guitarist at least since he was 15 years old (he's 47 now), and he has done rock, blues, fusion, new age, hard rock, and even a beautiful version of "O Come O Come Emmanuel" (I believe that's on "Merry Axmas II") And his solo album "Electric World" is incredible (Two Cd set, instrumental, mostly jazz/fusion style, if you don't have it, try to get it and give it a listen). Don't write this guy off if all you think of is his stuff with JOurney cause he's done SO much more than Journey (and they have a new CD out too). I think he's my favorite simply because of his talent and skill, his passion and his awesome versatility to play so many different styles.

I would say it's a tie between David Gilmour and Slash. Both have a way of doing a lot with a little. Not that either lack skill in any way, but they seem to choose to keep it simple and focus on melody and what fits, rather than trying to showcase their technique and skill each time they play a solo.

I read a good quote from I think Bob Rock in the Guitar Legends edition of Guitar Player, where he said that David Gilmour could take a ukelele and make it sound like a Stradivarius.
... and that's all I have to say about that.

ALL generalizations are WRONG

I know the topic is about guitarist, but i'm really inspired by quite a few bass players too (some one will inevitably mention primus)...

Peter Hook (Joy division - bass): plays bass like a lead guitarist, and has produced some really really simple but catchy and powerful bass lines (just listen to "the kill").

Tom Morrello (rage against the machine): what can i say... funk on distorted guitar (it does creep into heavy metal in a few of the songs), and some really great effects..

Hendrix/ Clapton (the cream years) : this is something poeple dont seem to realize, Hendrix drew inspiration from cream, and if you listen to "sunshine on your life", you'll realize how "Hendrix" the solos are.
What i like is the fact that there's a main riff, and there are lots of little bits thrown in to spice it up (as opposed to the boring verse chorus verse routine at the moment).

Cobain (nirvana): it's quite impresive how someone who basically based their whole carrer on power chords wrote some great songs.

the list goes on, but those are the main ones at the minute.

i,ve got what i call "my big six". here goes!
1). STEVE MORSE. my overall favorite. he has a picking style that goes beyond incredible! and he can do it live flawlessly. a master of all styles and TONE!!!
2). JOHN PETRUCCI. another master of the pick. like morse, his use of chromatics are great! his tone, feel, speed and rythym playing knocks me out!
3). JOE SATRIANI. his use of legato amazes the hell out of me! unusual playing.
4). NEAL SCHON. a favorite of mine since 1978. showed me that along with blazing you must possess melody and feel. changed the way i approached the guitar.
5). EDDIE VAN HALEN. i always find my way back to VAN HALEN 1 thru fair warning. i remember well the impact eruption had on everyone back in 78. amazing!
6). and last, but not least, ALEX LIFESON. his approach to filling in the spaces! suspended chords! love the guy, a MAJOR influence on my songwriting!

i have many influences, but these guys seem to be my overall ones.

my three best. two are a bit controversial but bear with me...

Johnny Marr - Best rythem player in the world. u name it, finger plucking, 12-string, distorted power chords, he's done the lot. exept solo's. shame.

Johnny Greenwood - Brill soloest and also takes the guitar to wierd places. eg. the jazz solo in Paranoid Android and the blues riff in i might be wrong. a exelent inovater too.

Jimi Hendrix - The origanal inovator. he through out the rule book and re-wrote a new one. pure class.

Come to think of it, none of these three are great technical players, but great at expressing feelings through the guiter, which to me is what it is all about.

P.S. Jimmy Page is ace too, and May, and Beck, and Vai, and Slash........
