How do you get the nut off a guitar if, for example, you wanted to replace a plastic one with graphite or bone or to put a shim in to raise the nut slightly?

Oww! Nut removal...sounds painful. Just kidding. It shouldn't be glued in or anything, so with the proper tools, you can probably tap it out. But if its a good guitar, I'd either a)Practise on a crap guitar -or- b)Get a pro to do it.

Forget about your sin - give the audience a grin
Enjoy it - it's your last chance anyhow.

What I do for a nut removal is take a saw... a small sized hand saw should do... and cut down the middle of the nut length wise (perpendicular to the way the strings run) until you get close to the bottom of the nut slot... Then all you have to do is push the two seperate sides toward the middle and it should pop right out. Plastic nuts are the easiest to work with... Good Luck!
