Your album seems more nostalgic than the stuff you've done with Mr. Big. The closest I came to anything Mr. Big was "Double Trouble," which leads me to believe that when people go off and do solo albums, and the music is totally different from the bands they were in, it makes me think they've been dying to do this because they have their own way of writing.

That's why I wanted to do the album in the first place. I was writing stuff for Mr. Big. And the main inspiration was to do songs that I can sing, because I've had a lot of offers, over the years, people who've suggested that I do an instrumental guitar record. I've just never been that big a fan of instrumental guitar music. I can take a song here and there, but, in general, the stuff I listen to always has a singer. That's what I like. Whenever I write, lots of times I write simultaneously the guitar and vocal part. When I write, I'm the one that's singing, so I'll write for my voice. Everybody's voice is different. Sometimes, when I write a song and play it for Mr. Big, Eric, the singer, would go, "Man, it doesn't feel comfortable for me to sing it, because you wrote it for your voice." Some of the songs were written during the Mr. Big era. Some are more recent.

That's the coolest bootleg I've seen in a long while. Where'd you happen across that gem?

That doesn't mean he has too little material to tour with G3.

Yea, no doubt. I'd stab a nun in the neck to get a higher quality video of that performance. The guy who recorded it has the worst case of Parkinsons I've ever seen.

Joe satriani may be the most versatile guitarist ever. Certainly the most soul in his playing.

Not to mention Country(Lay Down Sally) and Classical/Spanish style(Live concert versions of Layla unplugged and other songs, He is Actually quite good at that style)

Yeah, everybody who's been mentioned thus far is incredibly versatile, but, in my humble opinion, John McLaughlin takes the cake.

If at first you don't succeed, you are obviously not Chuck Norris.

I'm pretty versitile......some day I'll be very versitile....as long as I keep the drive to learn new things. I think Randy Rhoads was versatile but never had the chance to really show it. Dee was imo a good little ditty.

Can I just throw Tommy Emmanuel into consideration here? He is amazing. He started off palying electric stuff, and now plays the most amazing fingerstyle guitar. He can pretty much play any style (and doesif you listen to his albums). If you haven't seen or heard of him, go to his web site and buy his live DVD - it is jaw droppingly good.

The first Tommy Emmanuel piece I ever heard was his adaption of Mozart's "Rondo Alla Turca". It still wows me every time I hear it.

Havent seen John Petrucci mentioned in this thread, he does everything from prog rock to shred to classical and everything else in between. I just heard an amazing cd with him and the keyboard player from Dream Theatre where they basically jammed for a few hours on front of a crowd. It sounds incredible, check it out if you like JP.
Satriani is also hugely versatile, his techno album is testament to that. Another great player worth a mention is Greg Howe, neo-classical, shred, prog, fusion, accoustic, rock etc.

Yeah, I think John Petrucci could make a decent living as a classical guitarist.

The most VERSATILE guitarist that I've ever encountered was Tommy Bolin  :D lin.. Rock, Jazz, Fusion, mellow, heavy, island.. you name it.. He died in '76, but was in James Gang and Deep purple, Billy Cobham, Alphonze Mouson, others.. and had 2 excellent solo albums as well. I'd recommend his solo work.. Teaser and Purple's Come taste The Band albums..
