It sort of has happened to me. I got my gear back, but I understand completely how it feels. I was with my friends hanging out, being dumb and what not. Came home and saw all of my gear and computer gone. For a week I went on under the impression that I had nothing. Turns out my mom's ex-boyfriend just decided he wanted me to "learn" a stupid lesson that meant nothing. So he took my ****, locked it in the garage and let me think my stuff was stolen. I tell you, it really sucks. It's one of the worst feelings. Violated is a word that comes to mind.
