I tried to move part of a thread that got off-topic but was turning into a good discussion about some of the useless gibberish that sometimes appears in the threads here. I apologize to anyone whose posts were lost. This new thread is a place to resume that discussion about the yep thread and some of the spill-over.

That particulat thread got started when someone was trying to reply to something else. The sillyness exploded from there. It serves as a vent for some of the insanity, but it's counter-productive when other threads get infested with useless posts. I think it's important to bear in mind what the word "discussion" means. In this particular part of the forum (Open Discussion), it's normal for the topic to drift, just as it would in a conversation. Posts should contribute to clarifying understanding of a topic, or at least defining your position on a matter of opinion.

I thought the "yep" thread was a lot of fun. However, I thought the nonsense should have stayed contained in that thread.

I agree that the threads often get off topic, but what can you do??

People just want to post something, if not anything, so that's usually how it happens.

I'll try to keep my nonsense in my own threads, but it's hard! That damn ADD.

Ture enough. You and I have had some memorable exchanges, and I hope that continues. I just want people to understand that nonsense should be kept out of the other parts of the forum.

I have no problem with the way that threads drift of topic eventually. Normal conversation usually 'moves on' after the initial topic seems to have been covered. It would be better to start a new thread, but I can understand that it's easier to just keep on going.

And after my recent disaster trying to split a thread, I can understand a certain reluctance to try that again.

I don't have a problem with zany posts. I've been known to put up quite a few myself.

I'd just like to keep the craziness in certain threads in Open Discussion, so that when people ask questions in the rest of the forum, they don't have to wade through a bunch of crap to get to the answers they need.

Anyways, at least the nonsensical posts stick to the open discussion, and don't really wander into the other areas of the site. That's why I don't have that many posts and I've been here damn near 5 years. I only reply when I have something useful to add to the discussion.

I personally don't mind when the topic changes, just so long as I get an answer to my question in the process. If I get guidance then letting the topic go where it goes is the least I can do to return the favor. Besides, it's kind of inevitable. Someone makes an "anal retentive" joke then the conversation shifts to bowel movements. Personally I've got a sense of humor from the bathroom so I'm gonna laugh and participate most likely.

I was wondering where it went. I went to go take a shower, and when I came back…..it was gone. haha no biggie though. I'll try to recapture what I said.

I wonder if the reason that the threads go way off topic is due to the very fact that this is a site for guitar players/musicians. I assume that a good portion of the people who use this site (members, users, or guests) are at least semi musical, and tend to be a little more creative than your average non instrument playing, or artistic person…..generally speaking. In the last 6 months or so, I have really noticed a difference in the way my mind thinks and functions (with ADD), compared to most other people with out it. (I still think it’s the greatest disorder in the world!) More creative people tend to think in a non-linear manner. This non linear thinking is the reason that such a high percentage of artist, CEO’s, entrepreneurs……and prison inmates all have ADD. Not saying that everyone at GT does, but I know at least a few do.
Its great to talk about absolutely nothing in the open discussion forum, I have done it many a times, but I think it could be cooled down a bit in the other forums.

 You all shutup now!You think this is a joke?Life is frigin serious!I swear, one more nonsense post and everyones gonna get it.Keep to the subject and maintain a focused approach.Answer peoples question when they ask immediatly...

I'm sick of the malarky on the forum...go to another forum to post junk.Either be responsible, accurate and upright and serious or don't post at all.We don't need jokers around here.Get out if you don't like it.Every aspect of guitar is serious and the open forum is no different.Keep all discussions civilized and mature.Anything resembling nonsense will be ignored.

No need to get bummed about it. And no, I'm not saying every post has to be exactly on topic. And I don't mean for people to feel that they have to be serious all the time. We just need to give a bit of thought to whether what we're about to post is actually gonna be useful to somebody who's asking for some help.

I think that creative playfulness is a good thing. It's definitely something a lot us have, and I think the Open Discussion section of the forum is a good place for us to enjoy that.

That is a great assessment of how so many threads go these days, the quality of posts isn't what it used to be. There seems to be a great deal more crap to sift through to get to something actually worth reading.

Its not that there should be only serious posts, but there needs to be a little discretion. After reading Akira's "good bye for a week" thread, I hope some people can relate to this analogy.....God help me!!
So, pornographic websites. I’d be lying if I said I never went to one. Don’t now, I just don’t need that in my life (not the focus of this post though). So anyways, its great to see boobies and whatnot on an adult website, but do you like all that filler stuff….the “join now for free XXX” or all the good stuff covered up or fuzzed out. No, you want to see some nice luscious boobs! Same principal as what is trying to be said in this thread, only less boobies. Besides the Open Discussion forum, we need a little less “filler” discussion, which, imo, hasn’t been that bad till the yep thread in the guitar basics section. That thread was amazing though!

Well there have been many new users on the board latley.People with over 100 posts and have been here for less than a month. Its not like this is some new issue...its happened before and it passes.Everyone moves on when the candle burns out and such nonsense threads are extinguished.

This is the only time ive seen anyone actually get upset about it...really,the only outcome by complaining about it is more foolish threads. Also, latley there has been many momentous "ive reached the 1000 post mark" celebration threads.I'm headed for a thousand very soon, but i'm not gonna make a thread lol.

Whatever...its a forum.Post stuff that you feel is relevant.I don't see too much outright 'jibberish'.Mabey I ignore such threads where I have no input.

I don't think this thread was intended to start as a complaint. I made a comment in another thread to LATS, much like my first one in this thread, about why the discussions tend to drift so much....not that its a bad thing, but I was genuinely curious of why, wondering if the same kind of thing would happen in a forum about say enginering or for lawyers or something. It sounds like LATS tried to take a portion of that thread to make what would have been this one, but thanks to technology, couln't quite pull it off.

I tottaly understand what you are saying PonyOne, and I think you understood what I was saying. I don't think sensless talk means you have add..anyone can do that. You can't fake ADD or take the things you like about it and some how change yourself to be artistic or creative. You either have it or you don't, and if you do, you are in it through the good and the bad...the sometimes very bad.

I can definitely understand all of that PonyOne. I have only recently come to appreciate ADD. I like it a lot now because I feel so “free” with my thinking. Where most people see a dead end or a barrier, I see an opportunity. Here’s just a stupid example: I was walking with some friends on a sidewalk, they stayed on the sidewalk and walked down these stairs way out of the way to get to where we were going….I just walked on the grass. Ya, that is just a little thing, but when that happens in your head all the time, about everything, it can be a very cool thing. It used really suck because I really didn’t have friends or hung out with people till I was 17 because I are just so weird that people didn’t want to be around me, and the most attention I got was getting beat up or pushed around in school. Or I got 18 detentions in 7 grade cuz I couldn’t control myself. Or countless other stupid stupid things i did when I was growing up. Or the depression that haunted my life from the age of 8 to 17. Once you get it under control, ADD has the potential to be a very good thing. That was true when I said that a high percentage of artist, CEO’s, entrepreneurs, and prison inmates all have ADD.
I read the greatest quote in this article in NewsWeek that was about ADHD: “While the A students are learning the specifics of photosynthesis, the ADHD kids are staring out the window wondering if it still works when it is cloudy”.
